REGIONAL TRACTS
City of Jasper, June 2010 - almost 300 new jobs are coming to northeast Georgia as Walmart gets ready to open another new store.  The opening is planned in late summer in Jasper and a hiring center is now open and taking applications.  It is located on East Church Street in Jasper and is open Mondays through Fridays, 7:00-5:00 and Saturdays from 7:00-12:00.
According to store manager Clete Marshall, the store will be hiring both full and part-time associates.  "We are excited to add Walmart to Jasper and bring good jobs with career opportunities to the area," he said.
Marshall said workers are expected to work in all areas of the new store, including supervisory positions.
Gwinnett County, May 2010 - Gwinnett County has preliminary approval to move ahead with a proposal to privatize the local airport.
The Federal Aviation Administration accepted a pre-application for Briscoe Field to be included in a pilot program to pursue privatization without having to pay back federal grants.  Gwinnett now has the fourth of the five reserved slots, although the move does not guarantee the airport will be leased or sold.
The pre-approval allows the county to move forward with a study, including extensive public input.  While Propeller Investments has brought forward a proposal to take over the general aviation airport and open it up to scheduled commercial flights, the county's private partner would be selected through a bid process.
"The Board of Commissioners and staff are looking forward to launching the lengthy process of studying potential airport operations and management opportunities," Commission Chairman Charles Bannister said.  "Like most communities today, Gwinnett is looking to identify significant new revenue sources through efficiencies, user fees and privatization or sale of valuable assets.  Any financial benefit for taxpayers must be balanced with safety and other impacts to our community, in addition to exploring the environmental and economic impacts, we will conduct an extensive community outreach an involvement program.  I expect county staff to meet with citizens an other interested parties and stakeholders throughout the process."

NATIONAL TRACTS
Baby Boomers on the Move - Whether it's in the Sunbelt or the Rustbelt, a move across the street or across the nation, Baby Boomers are still willing to move to a new place when they retire, according to the 2010 Del Webb Baby Boomer Survey.
Today, Baby Boomers are even purchasing their home before they actually retire.  According to the survey, nearly a third of older Baby Boomers plan to move in retirement, with more than 50 percent planning to move to a different state, about 25% planning to move to a different city within the same state, and less than 20 percent planning to move within the same city.  Additionally, the desire to move during retirement is on the rise among today's younger Boomers surveyed, with 42 percent of those turning 50 in 2010 planning to do so, as compared to 36 percent among 50 year-olds in 1996.
The Carolinas have emerged as the preferred destination for retirement, while perennial favorites, Florida and Arizona, remain top contenders, according to respondents.  Among Baby Boomers looking to move, the most important factors in cost of living and access to preferred healthcare programs, 81 percent and 66 percent for the younger Boomers.  Surprisingly, cultural and recreational amenities, as well as a more favorable climate, ranked higher than being close to family members.

The Fed’s have released the Beige Book, which is a survey of economic conditions conducted by its district banks. Surveys conducted found that all 12 Fed districts are reporting economic growth, this is the first time this has happened since the deep recession hit in December 2007.

The U.S. is considered to be in a moderate recovery and we should expect to see continued growth through the next year, although un-employment is expected to remain higher than usual. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernake has recently stated that, “it will take a significant amount of time to replace the jobs that have been lost during the recession. He pointed out signs of improvement, but cautioned that improvement in the vital housing sector has been shallow and remains vulnerable.
